View Newspaper Group wins big in MPA Better Newspaper Contest

LANSING — View Newspaper Group, parent company of the Tri-County Citizen, is proud to announce that the group has won 60 awards in the Michigan Press Association 2019 Better Newspaper Contest.

“It is a great honor to be recognized by our peers in this way,” said View Newspaper Group publisher Wes Smith. “We are especially proud of the Tri-County Times in Fenton, and The Daily News in Greenville as both newspapers picked up the top award of Newspaper of the Year in their class.”

At the Tri-County Citizen, staff reporter Jeanne Marcello swept the feature photo category. She received first place with her photo of a Montrose student holding a sunflower at graduation. She took second place with her photo of a cat with some pumpkins in late October. She received third place for her photo of Big Rock Elementary School students walking to school.

Other big wins for View Newspaper Group included sweeps, meaning a win in first, second, third, and in some cases, honorable mention in categories for: Best Columnist – Tri-County Times columnist Vera Hogan; Best Special Section – Tri-County Times, Huron County View and Lapeer Area View staff; Best Sports Feature – Tri- County Times and Huron County View staff; and Best Sports Photo – Township View, Huron County View and Tri-County Times staff.

Other first place wins included Best Newspaper Design for the Tri-County Times; Best Page Design for The Daily News; Best Sports Column for The County Press; Best Business/ Ag News for the Tri-County Times; Best Feature Photo for the Tri-County Citizen; Best Daily Photo Story for The Daily News; Best Sports Writing for The Daily News and the Huron County View; Best Home Furnishing Ad Design for the Tri-County Times and Best Home Services Ad Design for the Tri-County Times.

The 2019 MPA Better Newspaper Contest was judged by the Montana Press Association, reviewing 3,500 entries from 106 Michigan newspapers. For a full list of winners visit www.michiganpress.org.
