Indian sackers drop two to visiting Cavaliers

CHESANING – The Indian varsity diamondmen dropped a doubleheader to visiting Corunna on Thursday, May 10.

The Cavaliers led 4-2 after three innings. Chesaning added a run in the fourth to cut the lead to 4-3. Corunna got the run back in the fifth, to go ahead 5-3. The Indians took the lead in the sixth with a three-run inning. Corunna knotted things at 6-6 in the seventh, before taking the win with a four-run ninth innings.

Jacob Turnwald got the start on the mound for the Indians. He went four innings, allowing four runs off six hits and no walks while striking out three. Cole Higley and Jarrett Kelley came on in relief, throwing two and two-thirds innings and two and one-third innings, respectively.

Chesaning tallied 10 hits in the contest. Colin Rodriguez and Trent Devereaux each had multiple hits for the Tribe. Rodrigutz and Brendan Greenfelder each doubles, while Noah Rieder, Garrett Powell, Turnwald, Kohl Qualls and Kelley all had singles.

In the nightcap, the Indians tried to rally from a six-run deficit, only to come up short in a 7-5 loss.

Corunna led 7-1 at the end of four innings. The Indians rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth, before the game was called on account of darkness.

In the third inning, Rieder singled to right, then advanced to second on a wild pitch with two outs. Michael James found the green on a bloop error over second, scoring Rieder.

The Indians picked up four runs in the fifth, taking advantage of some Cavalier miscues, three walks, and singles by Rieder and Rodriguez.

Rieder and Turnwald each had two hits.

Greenfelder got the start on the mound, going two and two-thirds innings and giving up six runs, three of which were earned, while striking out two. Lucas Escamilla made his 2018 pitching debut in relief, going two and one-third innings and allowing one run off one hit and a walk.,

With the losses, the Indians drop to 6-10-1 on the year.
