Bulldog softball girls fall to Sharks, split with Vandals

The St. Charles varsity softball squad opened the week with a pair of tough losses to St. Louis.

In the opener, the Sharks pulled out a 4-2 win in seven innings. St. Charles scored one in the first and one in the third. St. Louis scored two in the first, one in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Payton Parrish took the loss on the mound for the ‘Dawgs. She gave up four runs, one earned, off six hits and seven walks while striking out five in six innings of work.

Shelby Grunas swatted three hits, scored a run and had a stolen base on offense. Mack Hilden and Grace Douglas each had a hit. Hilden also had a RBI, as did Parrish. Kendall Pahl scored a run.

In the nightcap the Sharks slugged out a 10-4 victory in seven innings. St. Louis scored two in the first, three in the fifth and five in the sixth. St. Charles had one in the four and three in the fifth.

“Against St. Louis, we hit right at people and they made the plays,” St. Charles coach Mandy Volk said.

Peyton Volk got the start on the mound. She gave up eight earned runs off 12 hits and two walks while striking out two in five innings of work. Allison Duranso came on in relief and allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out two.

On offense, Grunas had a hit, a run and three RBI. Kushion had a hit and a run, as did Sydney Miller. Macey Burke also had a hit. Pahl scored a run.

On Wednesday, May 9, the Bulldogs earned a split with Merrill. The Vandals took the opener 2-0, scoring a run in the first and one in the seventh.

Duranso went the distance on the mound, allowing two runs off three hits and six walks while fanning four.

She aided her cause at the plate with a pair of hits. Pahl, Parrish and Douglas each had a hit.

In the nightcap, the Bulldogs battled to a 3-2 win.

Douglas got her first start on the mound for the season. She allowed one run off four hits and a walk while striking out five in four innings. Volk came on in relief, allowing one earned with a walk and a strike-out.

Kushion had a pair of hits. Pahl had a hit with a RBI. Parrish, Duranso and Miller each had a hit with a run. Miller also had a RBI. Douglas had a hit.

“Our pitchers have improved, and the defensive effort put forth against Merrill was great to see,” Coach Volk said. “These girls have worked hard each day.”
