The scholarship was awarded to Matthews based on her academic achievement. According to www.spacecamp.com, recipients must excel academically and/or be participating in a gifted program.

“Advanced Space Academy explores college and career preparation through an immersive experience in science, technology, engineering and math,” the website said.

“Trainees undergo a variety of astronaut training exercises, engineering challenges, and teambuilding activities, all culminating in an extended-duration simulated space mission.”

Matthews applied for the scholarship with letters of recommendation from two of her teachers and highlighted her involvement in Odyssey of the Mind and the Shiawassee Scholars program.

She was notified in March that she had been awarded a full-tuition scholarship to attend the program this summer, according to her father, Merrick Matthews, who also serves as coordinator for New Lothrop’s Odyssey of the Mind team.

He added that Macy is interested in working for NASA one day.

“Our family took a spring break trip to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida where we had the opportunity to view the launch of a Falcon 9 rocket carrying a SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft to deliver supplies to the International Space Station,” he said.

She is a freshman at New Lothrop High School, and also participates in cross country, basketball, and track and field.
