FUEL ASSISTANCE SIGN-UP – The Saginaw County Community Action Center will be holding sign-up for deliverable fuel assistance (propane, fire wood, pellets, fuel oil and kerosene) on Wednesday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 pm. at the St. Charles United Methodist Church, 301 Belle Ave., and on Thursday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chesaning Lions Club, 17200 Corunna Road. The following documents are needed to complete the application process: Valid Michigan picture identification for all adult (ages 18 and over) household members; Social Security cards for all household members; and proof of all household income for the past 30 days (employment check stubs, child support, Department of Human Services FAP/FIP statement, Social Security statement and/or unemployment statement). SCHOOL BOARD – During the Monday, April 16 meeting of the Maple Grove Township Board, Clerk Tish Yaros announced that those who want to run for a seat on the New Lothrop Public Schools Board of Education should file before May 1 to be listed on the November ballot. Yaro said there will be five school board seats up for election.

MISTEGUAY DRAIN – On Monday, April 16, Maple Grove Township Supervisor Kevin Krupp said the Misteguay Creek Intercounty Drain project is still being legally contested. He previously mentioned that he doesn’t expect another drain board meeting until October. But he doesn’t think October is firm. On Nov. 11, 2017, Judge Janet M. Boes dismissed both lawsuits against the Misteguay Creek Intercounty Drain Board. However, both Albee Township and Shiawassee County filed to appeal the decisions. In late 2016, Albee Township filed a lawsuit against the Misteguay Creek Intercounty Drainage Board. Albee’s lawsuit contends the drainage board failed to perform the duties in a timely manner. It also asserts a claim that the Misteguay board is in violation of the Environmental Protection Act. In January of 2017, Shiawassee County filed a complaint against Albee Township contending its lawsuit has no merit. The Misteguay Creek Intercounty Drain project has been a source of contention since 2010.

NEW PLANNER – During the Thursday, April 19 meeting of the Montrose City Council, Wade Trim introduced Kevin Cook as the city’s new contact for planning services. Councilman Thomas Bigelow asked if Cook would make finding grants a priority, explaining that former planner Beth Schroeder had secured several grants for the city in the past. He is hoping the new Wade Trim representative would do the same. Cook told the council that they could make that a priority.

ALFRED STREET – During the Thursday, April 19 meeting, the Montrose City Council set a public hearing date for the Alfred Street assessment district for Thursday, May 17. City Manager Neil Rankin explained in May of last year, the city didn’t have the finalized numbers for the project from the Michigan Department of Transportation. Now the city has the numbers, Wade Trim has provided the cost to each parcel in the assessment district. Mayor Colleen Brown pointed out the city paid a large portion of the engineering fees on the project, which is why the costs on the assessment letters will be lower than the estimates given last year.

MONTROSE CHAMBER – The Montrose Chamber of Commerce has been officially re-established under new leadership. The Montrose City Council has agreed to allow the chamber to hold its meetings at the Montrose Railroad Depot on the first Tuesdays of the month at no charge through 2018. Councilman Robert Arnold announced the group’s first event will be Art in the Park, at Lions Park, on Saturday, June 2.

GARDEN SHED – During the Thursday, April 19 meeting of the Montrose City Council, Mayor Colleen Brown explained there had been a fire that destroyed the home at 120 Grover St. in Montrose several years ago. The garage is still standing. The owner is willing to sign ownership over to the city in lieu of taxes. The property is situated next to the Montrose community garden. Brown proposed that the garage be used to store equipment used to maintain the garden. Councilman Thomas Bigelow wants to have the building inspected first. Council members agreed. The city clerk advised the council that the property would come off the tax roll. City attorney Otis Stout advised the city get a title search on the property before accepting it. Council members agreed to pursue the acquisition.

MONTROSE CITY RESIDENTS – The City of Montrose has a total of four vacancies on two key boards – the tax board of review and the zoning board of appeals. These boards don’t meet very often and participants are paid to attend the meetings. Training is provided. The city will be penalized by the state if these positions aren’t filled soon. Montrose City residents who would be willing to serve the community on either of these boards is asked to contact the city office to apply. POLICE MILLAGE – During the Thursday, April 19 meeting of the Montrose City Council, councilman Thomas Bigelow suggested the city place a proposal on the ballot to raise funds for a public safety millage. Among his concerns is the lack of a police liaison officer at the schools. There was also discussion that the city could use public safety millage to support public safety costs. Councilwoman Christy Sanborn commented she has noticed a lot more speeding in town. The council is expected to discuss at the next meeting whether they should place the proposal on the ballot for voters to decide.

JENNINGS FOUNDATION SEEKS COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD CANDIDATES – The Jennings Memorial Foundation is seeking candidates for the 2018 Montrose Community Service Award. Applications are available at The State Bank, Montrose Office, the Montrose City Office, the Montrose Railroad Depot, and the Montrose Chamber of Commerce. Those who know of anyone who promotes and enriches the Montrose Community by their service and commitment are encouraged to stop in at any of the listed offices and fill out an application. The winner will be announced at the Jennings Foundation annual meeting held in June.
