Tribe girls open with sweep of BC

MIDLAND – Chesaning’s varsity softball girls traveled Bullock Creek on Thursday, April 12 for their season opener, and came away with a doubleheader sweep of the Lancers.

The Tribe girls took the opener 5-0. They scored one run in the third, and four in the sixth.

Taylor Gross was dominate in the circle, pitching a two-hit gem. She walked two and struck out 14 in seven innings of work.

Erica Barta paced the offense for Chesaning with two hits and a run. Elizabeth Coon had a double, run scored, a RBI and a walk. Haylei Drope had a hit with two walks.

In the nightcap, the Indians jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings, then added three more in the bottom of the sixth for an 8-0 lead. The Lancers came back with four runs in the top of the seventh to close the gap, but the Tribe defense held.

Gross got the win, again going the distance and giving up four runs, one of those earned, with eight hits and three walks while fanning seven.

Drope led the offense with three hits, two runs and a RBI. Sidnee Struck added two hits and a run. “We had some first game jitters for sure in game one, but Taylor was able to hold Bullock Creek in check until our offense got going and plated some runs,” said Chesaning coach Ron Poyer. “I think we settled down nicely in game two, and if not for an error in the seventh the game wouldn’t have been as close as it ended. Our defense was solid behind Taylor in both games and we had some timely hitting as well. We certainly have some work to do, but overall I was very happy with how we played.”

The Indians are 2-0 on the season, 2-0 in Tri-Valley Conference Central Division play.
