Tribe cagers run past Durand in district semis

ELSIE – Chesaning’s varsity cagers earned a berth in the district finals Wednesday night, March 7 with 54-32 win over Durand in their semifinal match-up at Ovid-Elsie.

The Indians opened with a 12-9 advantage in the first quarter, but the Railroaders closed the gap with a 10-8 edge in the second. Still, the Tribe held a slim 20-19 edge at the intermission.

Chesaning’s offense went wild in the third quarter, out-gunning the Railroaders 20-8. The Tribe closed out the game with a 14-5 advantage in the fourth.

Jarrett Kelley paced the Indians with 15 points and a rebound. Garrett Bishop added 13 points with two rebounds, an assist and a steal. Jacob Turnwald had nine points, three steals, two rebounds, an assist and a taken charge.

Cole Higley grabbed eight rebounds to go with four points and a steal. Sam Forsyth passed out five assists with his four points, three boards and a steal. Brandon Keys also had four points with two assists and two rebounds. Brendan Greenfelder had four steals, three points, three boards and two assists. Austin Sabo had two points and two boards.

With the win, the Indians improved to 13-9 on the season, their winningest season in 20 years. They were set to face Ovid-Elsie in the finals on Friday night, March 9. The Marauders destroyed Corunna 56-28 in their semifinal game.
