Three Bulldogs, one Hornet qualify for top 16 match play at individual state bowling finals

BATTLE CREEK – All three St. Charles bowlers and the lone New Lothrop individual present at the Division 4 Michigan State Individual finals finished among the top 16 contestants in a field of 60 bowlers at M-66 Bowling Lanes in Battle Creek on Saturday, March 3.

Drake McFarland qualified as the number three seed for STC while teammates Luke Martell and Michael Pratt place fourth and sixteenth, respectively. New Lothrop’s Vaughn Filkins secured the number five seed in the match play tournament.

McFarland won his opening round match by 11 pins to advance to the Final 8 where he dropped a quarterfinals contest to Dustin Ward from Niles Brandywine. McFarland rolled games of 210 and 174, but he was nudged out by Ward, who recorded 198 and 191 scores to win by just five pins.

Martell lost a two-pin decision to his number 13 opponent as he carded scores of 148 and 204 while Pratt lost his match to the number one seed in the bracket, Korey Reichard from Vandercook Lake.

Filkins, from New Lothrop, lost his opening bracket contest to his 12-seed opponent from Ishpeming.
