Bulldogs fall to Hemlock in district semis

BRECKENRIDGE – The season came to an abrupt end for the St. Charles varsity cagers Wednesday night, March 7, with a 78-47 loss to neighboring Hemlock in the Class B districts at Breckenridge.

Hemlock jumped out to a 22-4 lead in the first quarter. The Bulldogs battled back with an 18-15 edge in the second quarter to trim the lead to 37-22 at the half. The Huskies pulled out a 19-13 advantage in the third and closed out with a 22-12 run in the fourth to put the game away.

“We let ourselves get down big in the first quarter by giving up uncontested shots and were never able to overcome Hemlock’s hot start,” said St. Charles coach Brad Henry. “We made a run at the end of the second quarter and had a chance to cut the lead to 10, but turned the ball over.”

Austin Kelly led the ‘Dawgs with 13 points, four rebounds and steal. Matt Benson added 12 points with eight boards, four assists and a steal. Tyler Hodges had six points and three rebounds. Cody Whiren also had six points. Blake Berent had four points, three assists, two boards and a steal.

“These guys played hard for me all year and were a good group of kids to be around,” Henry said.

The Bulldogs finished the season with a 7-14 record.
