Ashley District Library partners with free income tax assistance program

ASHLEY – Area residents with 2017 income of $54,000 or less can have their federal, state and city (if applicable) taxes prepared and filed for free at the Ashley District Library this year through the Scan and Go Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA).

Appointments to meet with an Internal Revenue Service-certified tax volunteer are available Thursdays, Feb. 22 through March 22. To schedule an appointment, call the library at (989) 847-4283, ext. 1007.

To help local taxpayers in the area, the Ashley District Library has partnered with the Michigan Economic Impact Coalition, a statewide group supporting free tax programs. The IRS VITA program offers free, safe, secure, and high quality income tax preparation services to eligible taxpayers.

The Scan and Go VITA is a drop-off service. Taxpayers will meet with an IRS-certified volunteer who will scan their tax documents into a secure system so their taxes can be prepared. The taxpayer will return the following week to review their prepared return before it is filed. The initial intake or drop-off process will take about 30 minutes and the final review, or pick-up, of the tax return will take about 15 to 30 minutes.

All VITA volunteers pass a standards and conduct test administered by the IRS before being allowed to meet with taxpayers. This ensures protection of information and quality service for users of the VITA program.

All VITA volunteer preparers are trained in federal, state and local tax law and certified by the IRS to prepare and file taxes.

To have their taxes prepared for free, area residents must make an appointment. Hours of MEIC Scan and Go VITA at the Ashley District Library are:

• Thursday, Feb. 22, from 3 – 6:30 p.m.

• Thursday, March 1, from 1 – 6:30 p.m.

• Thursday, March 8, from 4 – 6:30 p.m.

• Thursday, March 22, from 1 – 6:30 p.m.

When they come to the library, residents must have:

• Social Security or ITIN cards for them, their spouse and any dependents;

• Photo ID for them and their spouse;

• All income forms: W2, 1099, 1098, SSI, etc.;

• Information from all other income sources;

• 1095A, 1095B, 1095C, or other healthcare information.

To ensure they get all their credits and deductions, they should bring all of the following that apply to them:

• Copy of last year’s return;

• Amount spent on child/dependent care and care provider’s name, address, tax ID number;

• Heating paid in 2017 (Nov. 1, 2016 to Oct. 31, 2017);

• If they are Consumers Energy customer, they should bring a bill;

• Monthly rent amount and total rent paid in 2017;

• 2017 summer and winter property tax bills and receipts;

• Health insurance premiums paid in 2017;

• Alimony information;

• Bank routing and account numbers;

• Information needed for other deductions/credits.
