Lady Hornets win 10th straight, beat Bendle, 47-42

BURTON – Sydney Pope scored 16 points last Friday to lead New Lothrop’s varsity girls’ basketball to its 10th straight win and a key conference victory over host Bendle, 47-42.

New Lothrop was forced to share the league crown with Bendle last year, so Friday’s contest was viewed as a pivotal night in determining this season’s GAC champion.

“Our girls were determined that last year would not repeat itself tonight,” said NL coach James Perry, whose squad has now swept the season series with the Lady Tigers. “We know it is tough to beat Bendle on their own court, but we played with great energy and intensity tonight.”

The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 15-9 lead at the end of the opening quarter and led, 29-22 at halftime.

Pope made 4 of her 8 shots from the field, including a triple and feasted at the free throw line where she sank 7 of 10 charity tosses.

Caitlyn Bruff scored 11 points, including three of the team’s five treys. Meanwhile, Brooke Wenzlick tallied eight points and dished out two assists. Charleigh Birchmeier also scored eight points while dishing out a pair of assists and grabbing four rebounds.

Samantha Kulhanek scored two points and led the team in steals with three.

NL has run off 10 straight wins after opening the campaign with a nonleague loss against Pewamo-Westphalia.

“We have been growing as a team, but we still have things to clean up and mistakes to learn from in order to be where we want to be,” concluded Coach Perry.
