Ram cagers fall to Webberville in return

MONTROSE – The Montrose varsity cagers opened the 2018 portion of their season with a 59-46 loss to visiting Webberville on Thursday, Jan. 4.

The Spartans opened with an 18-13 advantage in the first quarter. Montrose cut into that lead with a 16-15 run in the second, but still trailed 33-29. The Rams gained a slim 5-4 edge in third, but the Spartans closed out the game with a 22-12 advantage in the fourth.

“We really struggled for most of the game,” said Montrose coach Jason Danek. “Even with us not playing well, we still had a chance going into the fourth quarter, but our poor play caught up with us. After a long break and some personnel changes (Brandon Gross being out with an injury), we were out of rhythm all night. Our effort, energy and intensity are going to have to improve.” The Rams were 15 of 47 from the floor, for 32 percent, and 11 of 17 from the free throw line for 65 percent. They grabbed 28 rebounds and 10 steals, and passed out 10 assists, but gave up 15 turnovers.

Logan Rhyndress led the Rams with 19 points and nine rebounds. Eric Vandefifer chipped in 14 points with five steals. Adam Stiverson added seven points.
