Bulldogs top Huskies in double OT

Photo by Keith Salisbury ST. CHARLES – It took two overtime periods to do it, but the Bulldog varsity cagers were able to pull out a 70-62 win over visiting Hemlock on Friday, Jan. 5.

St. Charles led 17-6 after the first quarter and 29-28 at the half. The Bulldogs maintained a slim 37-35 lead in the third before the Huskies knotted the score at the end of regulation, 52-52.

“We defended well and did not turn the ball over,” said St. Charles coach Brad Henry. “The guys executed the game plan very well tonight. We beat a very good Hemlock team. I am very proud of our effort and intensity all game.”

Matt Benson paced the Bulldogs with 38 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and two steals. Austin Kelly chipped in 16 points with 13 rebounds. Tyler Hodges added 10 points and seven boards. Blake Berent hauled in seven rebounds to go with five points.

Photo by Keith Salisbury “Matt was outstanding for us, scoring a career high of 38 points to go along with 13 rebounds and three last second shots,” Henry said. “Austin also played solid for us tonight with a double-double.”

He added, “Our current record is 4-3 and I continue to believe in this team. Good things are in our future and we plan to get better each day.”
