MONTROSE – On Tuesday, Dec. 12, the Montrose Community Schools Board of Education approved the purchase of two new convection gas ovens for the middle school/high school cafeteria, as well as entering a new lease agreement for custom-built school buses.

Superintendent Dr. Edward Graham told the school board the existing ovens are more than 20 years old and need to be replaced. “We’ve gotten our money’s worth,” he said.

Food Service Director Angela Florian obtained three quotes for new convection gas ovens. She said, “HPS gave us a really good bid on the two Southbend ovens. It was the best quote out of the three we received.”

The bid was $11,266 for two ovens, provided they’re ordered by Dec. 22.

Florian also explained the ovens are bigger than the exterior kitchen doors, which is why the installation costs are high. The installation costs were calculated based on having two people for two days, plus one person for one day.

The Montrose school board approved the purchase, which will be paid out of the food service budget.

Florian plans to wait until there is a day off of school to install the ovens. “I can’t be without an oven,” she said.

“The prices are for the same brand ovens we currently have at the high school/middle school. I’m hoping they should last another 20 years,” she said.

Dr. Graham commented that in addition to school lunches, Florian runs what is probably the largest summer lunch program in the state.

Florian, who also serves as transportation director, informed the school board that Montrose is coming to the end of its lease agreement with CH &H Leasing and Fleet Solutions.

“We’ve been very happy with them. They build to our specs,” she said.

School board president Alan Alguire asked about the cost of buses under the new contract. Florian said it will be $5,000 more for the total lease of 11 buses. She intends to present the bus lease information at the next school board meeting.
