Lady Indians bow to Huskies in cage opener

HEMLOCK – The Chesaning varsity girls’ basketball team opened its season Tuesday night, Nov. 28, with a 37-26 loss to host Hemlock.

The Tribe girls played tough defense, but couldn’t find their shots in the contest. They went 8 of 32 from the floor and 7 of 18 from the free throw line. Turnovers didn’t help, either, with Chesaning giving up 27 on the night.

Hemlock led 9-0 after the first quarter, then out-scored the Indians 7-5 in the second for a 16-5 margin at the intermission. Chesaning bounced back in the third, out-scoring the Huskies 16-13, but Hemlock retaliated with an 8-5 advantage in the fourth.

“I am very pleased with my team’s effort tonight,” said Chesaning coach Ryan Ferry. “We played good defense and I was happy to see the effort all the girls gave tonight. They all played with pride.

Haylei Drope led all scoring with nine points. Erica Barta and Katelyn Ferry each added six points. Ralynn Lucio chipped in three points and Katlyn Stanuszek had two. Stanuszek led all rebounders with six. Barta and Elizabeth Coon each had four, with Coon also taking a charge.

The Lady Indians start Tri-Valley Conference Central Division play on Thursday, Dec. 7 at Carrollton. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
