MONTROSE – At the end of the Tuesday, Nov. 28, Montrose Community Schools Board of Education, Superintendent Dr. Edward Graham announced that he would be retiring from the Montrose school district, effective Jan. 1, 2018.

The school board had just given Graham near perfect evaluation ratings with an overall status of “highly effective”. It appeared as though neither the school board nor the staff knew about his intent to retire. They sat in stunned silence for several seconds, before president Alan Alguire commented about making an attempt to convince Graham to stay.

Alguire said, “I do respect your decision. I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done for this school district. It doesn’t come without sacrifice. I’d like to thank you for all the work you’ve done. We all need time to process this. I have no doubt you’ll excel at whatever you do.”

Later in the week, Dr. Graham responded to questions posed by the Tri-County Citizen.

“First, my health is excellent,” he said.

He explained that many former colleagues have told him, “When it’s time to go, you’ll know it.” He said, “Years ago, that statement made very little sense to me, however, as it turns out, I have come to understand exactly what they were talking about.”

Graham explained, “I have always viewed the sum of my time as superintendent as just one link in an ongoing chain of professionals. Each link serves a specific purpose for a specific time and I believe that I have done my best to set up the ‘next link’ in the chain to be successful.”

As for his departure at the end of 2017, he said, “Having reached the decision that it was ‘time to go,’ sticking around would be counter-productive. While the district is forced to make some quick decisions, I have complete confidence in their ability to make excellent choices moving forward.”

Dr. Graham has served as Montrose superintendent since 2013.
