Quick start propels NL to 42-6 grid win over Beecher

MT. MORRIS – Sophomore quarterback Avery Moore ran for two touchdowns and passed for another last Friday night as New Lothrop’s varsity football team won its seventh straight without a loss by trouncing host Beecher, 42-6.

Moore was instrumental in getting the Hornets off to a quick start as he hooked up with Mason Ruddy for a 23-yard TD pass with less than two minutes played. Then, on the next NL possession, Moore scored on a 35-yard jaunt to put the Hornets ahead, 14-0, with 7:10 still remaining in the opening quarter. Ruddy kicked both extra points.

Collin Mulcahy, who would later score on a 68-yard punt return, put the third touchdown in the books with 3:33 to go in the first when he scampered in from 12 yards out. Ruddy’s PAT made it 21-0 and the rout was on.

The Hornets scored once in the second quarter, thanks to a 1-yard run by Joey Quaderer.

Up 28-0 at intermission, NL scored twice in more in the third on a 7-yard rush by Moore and on Mulcahy’s punt return. Beecher scored an inconsequential touchdown under the running clock rule with 4:56 remaining in the contest.

Moore finished the night with 110 yards passing and 69 yards rushing. Mulcahy was the next highest ground-gainer with 44 yards on just four carries. Ben Bigelow caught one pass from Moore worth 60 yards, Ruddy had two grabs for 30 yards and a score, Mulcahy hauled in three aerials for 16 yards and Quaderer had one catch for four yards as the Hornets piled up 250 yards of total offense to just 69 for Beecher.

Ben Bigelow dominated on defense with six solo tackles and four assisted stops. Quaderer had four solos and an assist, Ruddy came up with three solos and an assist and Mulcahy assisted on five stops and turned in one solo tackle.
