NL spikers edge past Byron, reach Silver finals at ‘Muth tourney

New Lothrop’s varsity volleyball team won a five-set cliffhanger over GAC rival Byron last Tuesday to remain unbeaten in league competition.

The key victory at Byron came on the heels of a strong showing the previous Saturday, where the Lady Hornets reached the finals of the Silver bracket at the Frankenmuth Invitational.

NL prevailed after five intense sets at Byron as they beat the Lady Eagles, 25-13, 15-25, 25-22, 27-29, 15-13 to improve to 4-0 in the league.

Jaren Bishop led New Lothrop with 20 kills and 15 digs in the win over Byron. Meanwhile, Kailey Wendling orchestrated the offense with 32 assists.

Anna Johnson was strong at the service line with three aces on 28 of 30 accurate serves. Alyssa Schnell came up with 38 digs and Emma Muron chipped in with 23 digs.

Katie Bitterman slammed 15 kills while Ebonee Nelson logged 6 kills.

On Saturday, September 23, the Lady Hornets grabbed the top seed of the Silver bracket after pool play and then beat Bendle before losing to Cass City in the finals by a 17-25, 10-25 count.

Bishop recorded 28 kills, 37 digs and 4 aces on the day while Schnell came up with 59 digs.

Wendling dished out 37 assists, Muron had 34 digs, Bitterman tallied 9 kills and Olivia Johnson finished the tournament with 8 kills and 4 aces.
