ANIMAL ORDINANCE – During the summer, the Chesaning Planning Commission worked on making several changes to the village’s animal ordinance. On Sept. 27, the commission did a final review of the changes in preparation for sending it to the village council for consideration. Commissioner Denise Navarre said people have asked her about whether they had to get their neighbors’ approval to have chickens in the village. Chairwoman Ellen Rodman confirmed that neighbors’ approval is necessary if they are kept less than 40 feet from the neighbors’ property. Rodman also pointed out the section on feeding cats states if a resident feeds cats for a certain number of consecutive days, it implies ownership. The revised animal ordinance also specifies the number of rabbits, chickens and ducks (no roosters) which can be kept within the village. The ordinance doesn’t allow bee keeping within the village. Councilman Matthew Hoover asked if the ordinance includes repercussions if someone’s dog is running the streets. Recording secretary Dennis McDonagh said the fines are at the end of the ordinance.
