Rams soccer opens season by winning two of three

Defending GAC-champions Montrose opened its 2017 soccer campaign by winning two of its first three contests, beginning with a 5-0 blanking of Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy on August 18.

The Rams, who won a conference championship last year for the first time since 2003, are replacing 7 of their 11 starters from last year’s squad.

But it didn’t take long for Montrose to get rolling this season as senior Tanner Ruiz took a pass from Saul Flores-Chinchilla and made it 1-0 with just over two minutes played in its season opener against Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy. The Rams went on for an easy 5-0 win over SASA.

Later in the first half against SASA, Angel Flores-Chinchilla, brother of Saul, was taken down in the penalty box and a penalty kick was awarded. Saul Flores-Chinchilla took the penalty and drove a ball into the right corner for a 2-0 lead.

Just minutes later, Ruiz found Saul on a through ball and the Rams made it 3-0, an advantage they took into halftime.

Wade Gray one-touched a cross from Trevor Gold into the back of the net to open up a 4-0 margin just one minute into the second half and Angel Flores- Chinchilla completed the scoring for the day later in the half off an assist from his brother, Saul.

Montrose traveled to perennial power Goodrich on August 23 for its second contest of the year and, despite posting a 1-0 lead at intermission, the Rams eventually lost to the Martians, 4-1.

The Flores-Chinchilla brothers combined efforts to give Montrose the first goal of the contest as Angel found his brother, Saul, who split the Martian defense and beat the keeper to the right side.

Goodrich finally broke through with three second-half goals within a 12-minute span and then added a fourth score with just 26 seconds remaining in the game.

Keeper Drew Gerth was spectacular in goal for Montrose as he racked up 34 saves.

The Rams then got back on the winning track on August 29 as they beat GAC foe Byron by a 4-2 count.

Saul Flores-Chinchilled opened the scoring midway through the first half on an assist from Ruiz and then scored again late in the first half on a penalty kick after Gold was taken down in the penalty box area.

Up 2-0 entering the second half, Saul Flores-Chinchilla scored on an assist from Gold to make it 3-0 just two minutes into the period. Gold then made it 4-0 ten minutes later on a penalty kick. Gold took the kick after Stone Morrison was taken down in the penalty area.

Byron scored two late goals in the contest.

After the win over Byron, Montrose stood at 2-1 overall and at 1-1 in the GAC.
