Shiawassee County Fair runs Aug. 6 through 12

CORUNNA – It’s fair time once again as the Shiawassee County Fair gets underway Sunday, Aug. 6 through Saturday, Aug. 12 at the fairgrounds on Hibbard Road.

Sunday is Veteran’s Day, and the fair opens at 8 a.m. with a flag raising ceremony and a ribbon cutting ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Special activities for the day include a pancake breakfast at 9 a.m., and a car, semi-truck and motorcycle show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The grandstand will feature TTPA modified truck and tractor pull/semi-truck pull at 4 p.m. The Jack Clarkson Band will perform in the entertainment tent at 6 p.m.

Monday is the start of the Shoes for Shiawassee drive to collect shoes for Heart of Shiawassee United Way. Bring donations to the main arena. The shoes will be distributed to community members who are in need.

Monday’s grandstand features DeWayne Spaw, country recording artist, at 7 p.m., followed by the USA Enduro derby/pickup truck demolition derby at 7:30 p.m. Jimmy G the Hypnotist will perform in the entertainment tent at 7 p.m.

The Skerbeck Family Carnival opens at 5 p.m. on Monday, and runs from 1 to 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and from noon to 11 p.m. on Thursday.

The Royal Bengal Tigers Show opens Monday at 6 p.m., and continues throughout the week with shows at 5:30 and 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, 2, 5:30 and 8 p.m. on Thursday, and at 3, 5:30 and 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Tuesday’s grandstand will feature DeWayne Spaw at 6:30 p.m. and the Super Kicker Rodeo at 7 p.m. The entertainment tent will host a family fun night with putt putt golf, yard games and ice cream.

Wednesday is Senior Citizens Day, with the first 100 seniors receiving free admission courtesy of Care N Assist and Oliver Woods Retirement Village. The senior picnic will be at 11:30 a.m. in the Black Pavilion. Senior bingo, awards and music will take place at 1 p.m., as will the Antique Tractor Club’s rally and parade.

In the grandstand Wednesday night will be Flat Track Motorcycle Racing at 6:30 p.m. Shiawassee’s Got Talent will be in the entertainment tent at 7 p.m.

Thursday is Kids’ Day, with a pigeon release scheduled for 8:55 a.m. The ShiaAlley Clowns will be doing face painting and making balloon animals from 10:30 to 1 p.m. The carnival will be open from 11 a.m. to noon as a special time for special kids.

The Antique Tractor Club will hold a parade and rally at 1 p.m.

The fifth annual Kiwanis Kow Plop will take place at 2 p.m. in the main arena.

In the grandstand, the Gee Haw Teamsters Classic Draft Horse Obstacle Course will take place at 1 p.m. Custer’s Cowboys and Cowboy Mounted Shooting Team will entertain at 5 p.m. Then at 7 p.m. will be the Michigan State Championship Mini- Horse Pull.

Also at 7 p.m. will be the Parade of Champions in the main arena, honoring high school seniors and awarding scholarships.

The entertainment tent will feature movie night courtesy of NCG Cinemas at 7 p.m.

Friday is Junior Livestock Day, with the auction beginning at 11:30 a.m. and continuing throughout the day and evening.

Steve “Elvis” Hunt will be performing in the entertainment tent at 7 p.m.

In the grandstand will be the USA Figure 8 Derby/Demolition Derby at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday is Small Animal Auction Day, with the auction getting underway at noon.

A pedal pull competition for ages 3 to adult will take place at 2:30 p.m., sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance.

The grandstand will feature the Monster Truck Show at 7 p.m.

“Shout” – a Beatles tribute band – will perform in the entertainment tent at 7 p.m.

Livestock judging and youth competitions will take place throughout the week, and the commercial and exhibit buildings, and the souvenir shack, will be open.

Ben Risney Wood Carving will also be serving up three shows daily, and auctioning sculptures at 6 p.m. on Friday in the main arena.
