Area golfers finish short at state finals

Two teams and one individual from the Tri-County Citizen coverage area qualified for the boys’ golf state finals, played June 9-10.

In Division 4 at Forest Akers East on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, the New Lothrop team finished 16th out of 18 with a 726. The Hornets shot a team score of 366 on Friday, and improved on Saturday with a 360.

Clarkston Everest Collegiate led the field with a combined team score of 629 for the two days. Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian was second with 640.

For the Hornets, Tucker Moriarity led with a two-day score of 166. He shot an 85 and an 81. Drew Dice finished at 171 (86 and 85). John Fras carded a 185 (88 and 97). Lucas Reinig finished at 204 (107 and 97). Jason Wendling shot 223 (116 and 107).


In the Division 3 finals at Ferris State University’s Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, the St. Charles team finished 18th out of 18. The Bulldogs shot a 385 on Friday and a 384 on Saturday for a combined 769.

Jackson Lumen Christi led the field with a 639. Big Rapids was second with 647.

For the Bulldogs, Matt Benson and Jeff Wachowicz led the team, each shooting a combined 179. Benson had a 91 and an 88, while Wachowicz shot an 89 and 90.

Teal Docken finished at 203 (101 and 102). Domanic Franzel shot a 208 (104 and 104). Noah Reinke shot 209 (105 and 104).

Chesaning’s Eddie Murphy was an individual qualifier. He missed the cut for the top 10 by two strokes, finishing with a 159 two-day total. He shot a 77 and an 82. The 10th placed individual finished with a 157.
