Saginaw County students honored at Junior Awards Program

SAGINAW – On Tuesday, March 21, 16 11th grade students from high schools across Saginaw County were honored for excelling in the areas of scholarship, leadership and service, at the 19th annual Junior Awards dinner and program.

The Junior Awards, presented by the Michigan State University Alumni Club of Saginaw County, was created to encourage and recognize the excellent performers in Saginaw County by honoring one deserving junior from each Saginaw County high school annually. Held each spring, students are nominated by their school counselor or principal.

The event was held at Swan Valley Golf and Banquet Center and featured special guest speakers Jeremiah McLaurin, Michigan State University alumnus, former MSU football team member and Saginaw native; and Dr. Clarence Underwood, Office of Admissions, Michigan State University.

Local recipients were Abby Bates, from Chesaning High School, nominated by principal Kimberly Vincke and counselor Miranda Volk; and Blake Berent, from St. Charles High School, nominated by principal Robert Paris and counselor Wendy Wachowicz.

The dinner was made possible by sponsors: Dr. Stephen J. Yanca, David Honaman, R. Scott Gilmore, Prost Wine Bar and Charcuterie, Star of the West Milling Company, Wilson Realty Inc., Zolton Law Offices, Bavarian Inn Lodge, Michigan Carbonic of Saginaw, Kyle Braun, Great Lakes Rheumatology, Law Office of Jerry Reif and Country Mini Storage.

David Brown, MSU alumnus and retired MSU Alumni Association director, served as the master of ceremony.

Entertainment was provided by Therese O’Connor, pianist.
