CHESANING – During the May 8 meeting, the Chesaning Union Schools Board of Education awarded bids for the 2017 bond projects.

During the meeting, R.C. Hendrick & Son Construction Manager Chip Hendrick told the school board, “We’re ready to write contracts for the bus garage and the road at Big Rock.” He explained they want to be ready to begin construction as soon as school gets out.

School board trustee Julie Keck asked when the sidewalk in front of the auxiliary gym will be finished; she’s been receiving complaints about it.

Hendrick responded, “We shouldn’t do anything until after school gets out.” He asked the school district contact him if there are any other concerns over the construction.

The new projects for 2017 feature repaving part of the bus garage park- ing lot and building a new bus access lane connecting Big Rock Elementary School to Liberty Street. The new lane at Big Rock separates bus traffic from parents picking up and dropping off their kids. It also provides the school with an alternate route in case of emergencies. Superintendent Mike McGough has said the bus access lane will not be open for public use as a drive-through. However, it may be opened to better accommodate traffic during major school events.

The school board approved the bid contracts recommended by Hendrick during the May 8 meeting. They are as follows: Fox Excavating won bids for the earthwork for both the bus garage at $97,000, and Big Rock Elementary School at $46,300. Other winning bids were: Pyramid Paving at $128,945; Stevens Fencing at $5,100; Zervan’s Masonry at $10,500; North American Door at $20,957; Dave’s Glass at $22,300; Niles Construction for painting at $26,216; Sure Shot Mechanical at $13,000; CCS at $7,158; and Cornford Electric at $21,475.
