Defense keys New Lothrop win over Vassar

MONTROSE – Strong defense has been a staple all season long for New Lothrop’s varsity boys’ basketball team and last Wednesday at Montrose’s high school gymnasium, the Hornets needed another staunch defensive effort in order to prevail in a district semi-final win over Vassar, 41-34.

“This was a big win for us against a good opponent and our defense was outstanding tonight as it has been all season,” commented NL coach Brady Simons. “We struggled at times shooting the ball and we didn’t play our best, but we found a way to make some key plays in the final minutes to get the job done.”

New Lothrop allowed Vassar just 14 second-half points to put itself in good position to win the game down the stretch.

The Vulcans led, 20-18, at intermission before the Hornets forged ahead by a 28-25 margin heading into the final stanza. A 13-9 fourth quarter secured the win for NL and earned it a spot in Friday’s district championship contest against Montrose.

Nolan Wendling led all scorers with 13 points. He was the only player to reach double figures in the scoring column.

Bryce Birchmeier added nine points and Brock Bishop finished with eight markers for New Lothrop. Kyle White and Luke Harris chipped in with five and four points, respectively.

No player was able to score more than seven points for Vassar, which finished its season with a 14-7 overall record.

New Lothrop, 17-4, squared off against Montrose, 17-5, on Friday night in a district championship tilt played on the Rams’ home court.
