Hornet cagers cruise past Byron

NEW LOTHROP – The Hornet varsity cagers cruised to a 57-38 win over Genesee Area Conference rival Byron on Tuesday, Dec. 17, in what proved to be their final game before the holiday break.

New Lothrop opened with a 19-11 edge in the first quarter, then out-gunned the Eagles 19-9 in the second and 15-6 in the third. Byron came back with a 12-4 margin in the fourth, but it was too little, too late to change the outcome.

“I felt the key to the game was our pressure defense, especially in the second quarter,” assessed Hornet coach Brady Simons. “We forced them into a lot of mistakes and we were able to convert those turnovers into a lot of fast break opportunities at the other end.”

Nolan Wendling led the Hornets’ balanced attack with 13 points, including three three-pointers. Kyle White had 10 points, including a pair of treys. Luke Harris added nine points. Ben Muron chipped in seven points with two treys, while Brock Bishop and Bryce Birchmeier added six points apiece.

Byron was led by Hunter Tonti with 14 points.
