• GLEANER’S TRI COUNTY ARBOR #768 of Montrose will meet on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. at the Montrose Railroad Depot. The public is welcome.
• The TRI-CITY WOOD CARVERS meet at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the Saginaw Township Fire Station Number One on Shattuck Road. Carving topics are discussed of interest to carvers of all skill levels.
• The MID-MICHIGAN SECTION OF THE SOCIETY OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERS will hold its October dinner and program meeting on Monday, Oct. 8 at the Kettering University Center, Fourth Floor Gold Room, 1700 University Ave., Flint. The program topic will be “Steam Coffin, Captain Moses Rogers and the Steamship Savannah Break the Barrier.” John Laurence Busch is an independent historian who has devoted years of research to discovering the true story of Captain Moses Rogers and the steamship Savannah, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Social hour is at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. and the program at 7:45 p.m. The cost for the dinner buffet is $25 for SAE and SVEC members, $20 for retired SAE members, and $18 for students. FOOD AND FELLOWSHIP

• St. Robert Catholic Church’s SUPER SALAD BUFFET AND BINGO will be held on Sunday, Oct. 21, at the St. Robert Activity Center, 310 N. Cherry St., Flushing. Doors open at 11:45 a.m. with buffet at 12:15 p.m. and bingo starting at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $10, advance sales only. Admission includes buffet, coffee/tea and regular bingo. Tables may be reserved for advance purchase of 10 or more tickets. No walk-in reservations will be accepted the day of bingo. There will be bingo prizes galore plus door prizes and welcome gifts. • The New Lothrop VFW Auxiliary 6579 will be holding their semi-annual CLASSIC BEEF PASTIE SALE on Oct. 23. Place orders by calling Susan Jacobs at (810) 496-7647. The cost is $4 each. Pick up will be at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 400 N Saginaw St., Montrose on Oct. 23, after 4 p.m.
• There will be a BREAKFAST BUFFET served on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the Masonic Temple in Montrose. The cost is $6 for the all-you-can-eat meal. Proceeds will go towards the scholarship fund.
• There will be a COMMUNITY SOUP SUPPER on the second Saturday of each month from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 1629 Brady St., Chesaning. No reservations are needed and there is no cost. The supper is open to all. Those in need of a ride should call (989) 845-3157 Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Chesaning American Legion Post 212 will hold their MONTHLY BREAKFASTS again on the first Sunday of the month, beginning Sunday Oct. 7. The breakfasts will run from 7:30 a.m. until noon. The cost is $7 for adults, $3 for children, and free for children 5 and under. The menu will include bacon, sausage, sausage gravy and biscuits, French toast, pancakes, hash browns, eggs to order, milk, orange juice, and coffee. Attendees are encouraged to bring an item for the CAER Center Pantry to help replenish it for those less fortunate and in need of these items.
• The Chesaning United Methodist Men are hosting a CHARBROILED STEAK DINNER on Sunday, Oct. 7 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the church fellowship hall, located at 1629 W. Brady Road, Chesaning. The menu includes salad, baked beans, baked potato, dessert and a beverage. The cost is $10 for a New York strip dinner and $6 for a half steak or ground round dinner. For those age 12 and under, the cost is $4 for a quarter-pound ground round dinner, and for ages 5 and under, it's free. All are invited, and take-outs are available.
• Zion Evangelical Lutheran School will hold its eighth annual COMMUNITY HARVEST FESTIVAL on Sunday, Oct. 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the school, 796 E. Hampton St., Chesaning. There will be free games for children, bingo, cake walk and more. There will also be prizes and free food. Come enjoy the day and the season. Costumes are welcome. All are invited.

• The SHIAWASSEE COUNTY MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS SELF-HELP GROUP will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 2 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the St. Johns United Church of Christ, 429 N. Washington St. in Owosso. For more information, call Brenda Johnson at (989) 288-5241.

ODDS & ENDS

• The Shiawassee Arts Center will be hosting a one day ECO/PHOTO EXCURSION with Great Lakes Photo Tours on Sunday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This workshop is for beginners and advanced amateurs alike. It will include group instruction with tutored photography sessions. Every budding nature photographer is offered an opportunity to learn more about their own camera while taking their photography to the next level. All participants can improve their photography and naturalist skills by learning from the professional team of Mark S. Carlson and Bob Grzesiak. Bring personal camera gear (film or digital), a sack lunch and beverage, appropriate clothing and footwear for any weather, a note pad/ pen, and a dark golf or large umbrella for shading subjects or rain protection. Part of the day will be spent in the classroom and part on location in Curwood Castle Park, along the Shiawassee River. The cost is $79 per person. Pre-registration and payment is required. The Arts Center is located at 206 Curwood Castle Drive, Owosso. Linden Road, Flint. There will be modern, collectible and antique dolls, Barbie and fashion dolls, accessories, clothing and related items. Admission is $2. Entrance is in the rear of the building. • The quarterly food distribution from the SAGINAW COUNTY COMMUNITY ACTION COMMITTEE will be at the St. Charles United Methodist Church on Monday, Oct. 1 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. for anyone who is in need. Please bring ID.

CHURCHES

• Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Montrose will host a 12-hour FALL SCRAPBOOK CROP event from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the parish life center. Scrapbookers will receive porter service, which includes assistance unloading equipment/supplies and setup. A massage therapist will be on site offering relief for sore necks or backs. The event also includes full table space, breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, desserts, door prizes, silent auction and specialty vendors. The cost is $40. Checks can be mailed to 400 N. • The Knights of Columbus St. Christopher Council #2943 will celebrate Mass at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7 at St. Mary Catholic Church of Albee. Breakfast will be served from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
• ST. CHARLES SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST COMMUNITY CENTER is open the first and third Thursday of every month from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. The center is located at the corner of Clinton and Marcy Streets in St. Charles, and serves those who are in need of gently used clothing, household items and furniture (when available). The center also accept donations of gently used clothing, household items and furniture. Interested persons should stop by if they need assistance or have any questions.
• Montrose United Methodist Church, 158 E. State St., Montrose, will host “MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE,” an evening of music and refreshments with piano, organ, vocal and bells, on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 5 p.m. A free will offering will be collected.

BAZAARS AND CRAFT SHOWS

• The newly formed Chesaning-Brady Fire Department Auxiliary will hold a CRAFT SHOW on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Fire Station One in Chesaning, on M-57 west of Fourth Street. Anyone interested in being a vendor should call (989) 845-7255 or (989) 245-4155.
• The women of Trinity United Methodist Church will host a FALL BAZAAR on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Interested persons should reserve a spot now. The cost is $15 per table, $20 after the Oct. 30 deadline. To reserve a space, contact Ellen Kress at (989) 845-6229.
• The Friends of the St. Charles District Library will hold their FALL BOOK AND BAKE SALE, AND QUILT RAFFLE on Friday, Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the library, 104 W. Spruce St., St. Charles. Items will be $2 donation per bag (bags provided). Quilt raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The drawing will be at 2 p.m. on Oct. 13. • A CRAFT BAZAAR fundraiser for the Chesaning Area Emergency Relief (CAER) Center and the Chesaning Senior Citizen Center will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Big Rock Elementary School. Please bring a non-perishable food item or cash donation per person for the entry fee. Other cash donations will be accepted. • The St. Charles United Methodist Women’s annual CHRISTMAS BAZAAR will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be lunch, baked goods and crafts. Vendors can secure tables by calling (989) 865-6679 or the church office at (989) 865-9091.

FUNDRAISERS

• The St. Paul Catholic Church HARVEST DINNER/RAFFLE will be Saturday, Oct. 27 in the Fr. Kolenski Hall at the church, 11 N. Howell St., Owosso. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. for judging of pumpkins designed by the St. Paul School and Religious Education students. Dinner and raffle will follow. Tickets are $5 each, six for $25 or 15 for $50. • There will be a CAN AND BOTTLE DRIVE for Mark Muirhead, sponsored by the Chesaning Middle School eighth grade class, on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Frank’s Super Market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those who have cans or bottles they would like to donate but are not able to drop them off should call Faith Minnis at (989) 577- 0161 and they may be able to arrange pick-up.

SENIORS

• The MARION TOWNSHIP SENIOR CITIZENS meet the first Monday of each month for a potluck dinner at the Marion Township Hall. All senior citizens are welcome. For more information, call 643-2201 or 643-5635.

HEALTH & SAFETY

• Lutheran Home Care will be providing a FLU CLINIC on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Immaculate Conception Church, 708 Sanderson St., St. Charles, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. For those with insurance, Lutheran Home Care will bill traditional Medicare, Health Plus, and Medicare + Blue for flu vaccines. Payment of $25 for all others is expected at the time of service.
• The Chesaning Young at Heart Club (Senior Center) will host FLU SHOTS on Wednesday, Oct. 3 from noon to 2 p.m. HealthPlus and Medicare Part B are accepted. The out-of-pocket cost for flu shots will be $27 and for pneumonia shots, $35. The club is located at 218 Church St., Chesaning.
• There will be a FLU SHOT CLINIC at the Maple Grove Senior Center on Monday, Oct. 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The center is located at 4017 Peet Road, Maple Grove.
• There will be a FLU SHOT CLINIC on Thursday, Oct. 4 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Brady Senior Acivity Center, 16020 Peet Road, Oakley.

REUNIONS

• The CHESANING UNION HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1967 is planning its 45th reunion on Nov. 10 at the Golden Glow Ballroom. The cost is $30 for singles and $60 for couples. Send reservations with payment to Sue (Hudecek) Ginderske, 1633 Lynn St., Owosso, MI by Oct. 15. VETERANS

• SHIAWASSEE COUNTY VETERANS AFFAIRS now has full time nationally accredited certified veterans service officers on staff. Call the office to schedule an appointment at (989) 743-2231 or stop in at 201 N. Shiawassee St., third floor, Surbeck Building. Visitors should park and enter in the rear of the building. Jerilyn A. Srein, director, and Charles R. Ross, benefit counselor, are available Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed at lunch from noon to 1 p.m.). Nathan Pierpont, AMVETS, will also be taking walk-in appointments from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Durand AMVETS Post on the first and third Wednesday of the month.
