Tribe place six at Saginaw Co. Meet

BIRCH RUN – Chesaning sent seven varsity wrestlers to the Saginaw County Meet at the Birch Run Expo Center on Saturday, Jan. 14, and six finished with medals. As a team, the Indians finished seventh out of 16 teams.

Senior Jerry Mahar was the only champion for the Indians. In the 160 lb. weight class, he defeated Bruce Rau of Valley Lutheran 6-5 in the semifinals, then had an outstanding match to beat undefeated Jared Putz of Michigan Lutheran Seminary 4-2 in the finals.

Sophomore Keith Wirostek wrestled the tournament of his career to take second place at 103 lbs. He entered the tournament as the sixth seed and pinned third seeded Chris Miller of Heritage in 4:25 of the quarterfinals. In the semis, he knocked off second seed Graham Fitkin of Freeland 14-4. Wirostek then was pinned in the finals in 4:32 by Jerry Fenner of Birch Run.

Freshman Justin Sloan finished third at 145 lbs., defeating Calving Boyd of Carrollton 5-3 in the consolation finals.

Sophomore Jared Weisenberger finished fourth at 125 lbs. He beat Lucas Chaddah of Nouvel Catholic Central to reach the consolation finals, where he lost on a 5-2 decision to Preston Hogan of Birch Run.

Junior Trenton Devereaux also finished in fourth place at 215 lbs. He defeated Brennan Webb of Frankenmuth 6-1 to reach the consolation finals, but lost a close 6-4 decision to Clay Henderson of Nouvel.

Senior Eli Fesler battled his way back through the wrestle-backs to finish in sixth place. He was pinned by Bailey Case of Freeland in 1:27 of his final match.
