Rams hold off LakeVille’s late surge

OTISVILLE – The Montrose varsity cagers built up a whopping 27-9 halftime lead over host LakeVille Friday night, only to watch it slip away in the second half. The Rams were able to hang on, however, for a 44-43 win over the Falcons.

The Rams led 18-4 after the first quarter, then out-scored the Falcons 9-5 in the second. However, LakeVille owned the third quarter, 24- 7 to erase most of the deficit. The squads played to a 10-10 tie in the fourth.

Montrose had the lead for the whole game, until there was just 51.2 left to play. That’s when the Falcons went ahead, 43-42. The Rams scored with eight seconds left on an inbounds pass to Jimmie Hodge to take the win.

“They (LakeVille) got the momentum in the second half, and we were a little flat,” said Montrose coach Rick Ustishen. “They outplayed us. We missed a lot of shots underneath in the second half, too many shots. You could just feel they (LakeVille) were getting more confidence with their shots. We just needed to play a little smarter. We weren’t as disciplined with our shots.” The Rams finished up the night shooting 5 of 21 from three-point range, and 9 of 25 from twopoint range for a combined 14 of 46, or 30.4 percent. They were 11 of 19 from the free throw line.

Hodge led the Rams with 22 points, five rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block. Chad Betz added 11 points with eight boards, two assists and two steals. Joey Anderson chipped in five points with four boards, four steals and three assists.

With the win, the Rams improve to 7-3 on the season, 4-2 in the Genesee Area Conference Red Division. They travel to Corunna on Tuesday for a non-conference game with the Cavaliers, then host Lake Fenton on Friday night.
