Junior Livestock Auction at the Saginaw County Fair

CHAMPION TURKEY, GOAT & LAMBS! - Isabella Kettler of the Stoney River Riders 4-H Club took grand champion ribbons with both her turkey and her wether goat. She also won reserve champion for her heavy weight pen of lambs. Her buyers were Zelinko Brothers (turkey), Struck Farms (goat) and Art Schmiege (lambs). CHESANING – The Junior Livestock Auction drew a crowd of bidders and spectators to the Saginaw County Fair cattle barn arena on Friday, July 29.

Local youth did exceptionally well in the livestock judging earlier in the week. Brothers Cody and Caleb Symons of Dusty Dudes 4-H captured several of the top awards in the hog competition. Cody won the grand champion ribbon for his 262 lb. hog (purchased by Hemlock Semicondutor) as well as reserve champion for his light heavy weight hog. Caleb won reserve grand champion for his 257 lb. hog (Ernie & Judy Birchmeier together with Jack & MaryEllen Symons) as well as reserve grand champion for his pen of hogs (Sovis Insurance Agency).


GRAND CHAMPION STEER - Reed Weisenberger of Dusty Dudes 4-H took top honors in the steer competition at the Saginaw County Fair. He took home the grand champion ribbon and sold his 1,355 steer at the Junior Livestock Auction for $2.25 a pound to Aldermans, Inc. Bryce Richardson of North Ridge Swine Club, who won the grand champion ribbon for his pen of hogs; purchased by Animal Healthcare of Chesaning and Card Brothers Equipment. Jordan Fischer of Stoney River Riders 4-H took the champion ribbon with his 241 lb. light weight individual hog (Sloan’s Septic Tank Service).

Matthew Vogelaar of Dusty Dudes won the ribbon for his 246 lb. champion light heavy weight hog (Mose Centennial Farm); as well as reserve champion for his medium heavy weigh pen of hogs.


CHAMPION RABBIT PEN - Paige Carmen of the Stoney River Riders 4-H Club won the champion ribbon for her pen of rabbits. Chesaning Township Supervisor Bob Corrin won the bid. Hilary Foster of Brady 4-H won the champion ribbon for her 273 lb. heavy weight hog (Animal Healthcare of Chesaning); as well as the champion ribbon for her pen of heavy weight hogs (Broad Street Pharmacy).

Jason Birchmeier of North Ridge Swine Club won for his champion pen of light weight hogs ( Jeff Vincke & Weiss Farm Equipment). Also of North Ridge Swine Club, Dominic Clolinger won the champion ribbon for his middle weight pen of hogs (Nader Construction & Bill Turnwald); and Henry Birchmeier won reserve champion for his light weight pen of hogs (New Lothrop Insurance Service & Burtch Feeds & Ben Burch).

Erin Turnwald of Chesaning FFA won reserve champion for her 283 lb. heavy weight hog (Greg Mahoney of Pioneer Sales). Turnwald also raised $4,000 on the sale of a lamb she donated to raise funds at the Junior Livestock Auction to help build another animal barn at the fair.


RESERVE RABBIT PEN - Karla Raymond (center) of the Taymouth Trotters 4-H Club won the reserve champion ribbon for her pen of rabbits. Karla and her sisters each held a rabbit to show them during the junior livestock auction. Jared Kulhanek of Dusty Dudes 4-H won reserve champion for his heavy weight pen of hogs.

In addition to Erin Turnwald’s donation lamb; Chesaning FFA’s Shelby Mead and Frankenmuth Patriots’ Renee Frahm donated hogs to be auctioned off to benefit the Saginaw County Fair animal barn projects.

Her buyers were Community State Bank and Robert Burns Financial Services.
