Works of artist Mary Birkmeier featured at MCC Fine Arts Gallery, March 14-29

FLINT – Mott Community College’s Fine Arts Gallery in the Visual Arts and Design Center will present an exhibition of work by Flint area artist Mary Birkmeier titled Efflorescence: Prints, Collage, Clay. Her work will be in the gallery from Monday, March 14 through Tuesday March 29. In addition, Birkmeier will give a public woodcut print demonstration on Tuesday, March 29, at 3 p.m. in room 115 of the Visual Arts and Design Center. These events, made possible in part by the Ballenger Trust, are free and open to the public.

Mary Birkmeier is currently an adjunct faculty member teaching printmaking at Mott Community College. She received a bachelor of arts in fine art and education from Michigan State University in 1964 and a master of arts, fine arts, Michigan State University in 1971. In addition, she received her elementary teaching certification, Michigan State University, 1984. She has taken many studio art courses at MCC, including painting, drawing, ceramics and printmaking. She has exhibited her work both locally and throughout the state of Michigan, including Buckham Gallery, Flint; Alma College State-wide Print Competition, Alma, Ann Arbor Art Association, Ann Arbor, and Pewabic Pottery, Detroit. Her prints are in many private and public collections including Alma College, Mott Community College, The University of the South Pacific and most recently, Laconia Gallery, Boston, Mass. and Mica Gallery, Lansing.

The work for this exhibition, “Efflorescence... Blossoming: the time and process of budding and unfolding of blossoms,” is a series of brightly colored and subtle woodcut prints, mixed-media, collage and glazed, fragile porcelain paper clay.

The Fine Arts Gallery is located in the Visual Arts and Design Center on the MCC main campus, located at 1401 E. Court St. in Flint. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, Monday through Friday.
