Chargers out-score Hornets 30-13 in 2nd quarter, run away with district crown

(TCC Photo by Hillary Grigonis) MONTROSE – A lopsided second quarter spelled doom for the New Lothrop varsity cagegals Friday night in a 75-52 Class C district finals loss to Valley Lutheran at Montrose.

The No. 5 ranked Chargers held a slim 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, but out-scored the Lady Hornets 30-13 in that second frame. New Lothrop was stuck playing catch-up from that point. Valley Lutheran posted a slim 21-20 edge in the third and an 11-7 advantage in the fourth.

New Lothrop was paced by Jade Gerber with 20 points, including four three-pointers. Morgan Wendling chipped in 11 points with four rebounds. Brittany Severn added 10 points with four boards. Emily Severn chipped in eight points to go with five rebounds and two steals. Erica Confer also had five rebounds.

Valley Lutheran was led by Kayla Engelhard with 21 points, Maureen Yurgens with 19 points, and Trista Brownlie with 15 points from five threes.

The Hornets finish the season with a 19- 4 record.
