SPORTS NOTES CHS BOYS TENNIS TEAM TO PRACTICE – The Chesaning High School boys tennis team will have its first practice on Wednesday, Aug. 11 at 4 p.m. on the tennis courts at the high school. The practice will be for both JV and varsity players, and each player must have a physical before practice begins. An informational tennis meeting for both parents and athletes will be held at Arthur’s Pizzeria in Chesaning at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3, with complimentary pizza and pop. Boys should call Dave Gasper at (989) 798-3913 if they are interested in joining the team or have any questions.SIGN UP FOR ROBERTS CHALLENGE – Thomas Township Parks and Recreation is taking registrations for the 2010 Roberts Challenge men’s slo-pitch softball tournament to be held Aug. 20- 22. It is a 12-team tournament, with all teams guaranteed four games. Entry fee is $200 (includes softballs). Register at Thomas Township Offices at 249 N. Miller Road, Saginaw, MI 48609 by Aug. 13. ROAD RACE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – Volunteers are needed for the Montrose Blueberry Festival Road Races on Sunday, Aug. 22. The race has expanded to an 8K and a 5K distance. Volunteers are needed at the start lines, finish line, late registration table, pre-registration table, chip table, post-race goodie table, pancake breakfast pass table, award table, at the race route corners and intersections, and at water stations. Volunteers are also needed on Saturday, Aug. 21 for the Family Fitness Time. MONTROSE SOCCER TRY-OUTS – Montrose High School will have conditioning and try-outs beginning Aug. 2 for any 9-12 grade boy interested in playing fall soccer. Conditioning begins Aug. 2 and continues through Aug. 10. Practices start Aug. 11. CHS GIRLS GOLF TEAM TO PRACTICE – The Chesaning High School girls golf team will have its first practice on Wednesday, Aug. 11 at 9 a.m. at Twin Brooks Golf Course. Each girl interested in joining the team must have a physical before practicing. Girls should call (989) 845-3325 by Aug. 1 if they are interested or have any questions. CACC TO HOLD YOUTH CAMP – The Chesaning Area Conservation Club, with the help of the National Wild Turkey Federation and Whitetails Unlimited, will hold its second annual youth camp on Aug. 14-15 on the CACC grounds at 13750 W. Baldwin Road, Chesaning. Camp is for ages 5-14, those age 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent, and any overnight youth campers must be accompanied by an adult. Activities will include a fishing tournament, skeet shooting, 3D archery, demonstrations and karaoke. There will be a $5 donation collected per child, which includes meals and prizes. There is a 50 child maximum, so interested persons should contact either Mark Stopjik at (989) 845-5947 or Chad Folks at (989) 845-1073 to reserve a spot. Campers should bring their tents, camping supplies, bows (club will provide if needed) and fishing equipment. GOLF SCRAMBLE ADDED TO BLUEBERRY FESTIVAL LINE-UP – The Montrose Blueberry Festival Committee and the Montrose Firefighters, Inc. are working together to present a golf scramble on Saturday, Aug. 7 at Briar Ridge Golf Course in Montrose. Registration will be at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Dinner and prizes will be immediately following, featuring a catered New York strip steak dinner. There will also be door prizes and a 50/50 drawing, coney dogs and chips at the turn, separate long drive and closest to the pin contests for men and women, Vegas hole, and putting contests with proceeds to benefit the Montrose Open Cupboard Food Pantry. Registration the day of the event will be $70 per person, $280 per team. Sponsors are also being sought for the event, including rafffle/door prize gift sponsors, cart sponsors, hole sponsors, coney dog sponsors, steak dinner sponsors and corporate sponsors.
