THE BUZZ ABOUT BUGS

Garrett Herington and a classmate examine a beehive frame during a field trip at Hartley Outdoor Education Center on Tuesday. Students examined the hives and learned how to identify capped and uncapped honey, worker bees, the queen, pollen, diseases and more inside a beehive. St. Charles started a honeybee program in conjunction with the eighth grade science class curriculum three years ago. The school has now started three hives, each with about 60,000 bees inside. Students were also able to search the wetlands for insects and larva, learning how to classify the bugs they found. The field trip was led by teacher Beth Moeller, Hartley naturalist Doug Holem and beekeeper Tim Kaufman (TCC Photos By Hillary Grigonis).
