Chesaning Showboat Music Festival returns July 10-17

CHESANING - The Chesaning Showboat Music Festival continues the tradition of great entertainment and events that bring people into town. This year the Showboat Committee and local volunteers have introduced a few new events like the Kayak/Canoe River Race and Cruisin’ to the River Car Show. Plus, enjoy LIVE entertainment nightly at the River Bend Hospitality Tent in Showboat Park.

Here’s a look at the 2010 Chesaning Showboat Festival:

JULY 10 - Praise Day in the Park

Starting at noon, Praise Day in the Park kicks off with local musical talent performing Christian music in Showboat Park. Praise Day chairman Pastor David Kimball expects to have six different groups performing praise songs.

The featured concert will be Apologetix, which performs Biblical parodies of rock music. It’s been called “Weird Al meets Bill Graham”. According to Kimball, Apologetix appeals to a wide audience of all ages.

GOLD CIRCLE tickets will be available in advance for just $10 per person. The GOLD CIRCLE ticket includes a catered meal 5-7 p.m. before the Praise Day featured concert, Apologetix,

Tickets for the Apologetix concert will be $5 each at the gate. Apologetix starts at 8 p.m.

All proceeds raised from Praise Day events will go back into Showboat to support festival activities.

A 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament and other outdoor activities will also be held in conjunction with Praise Day in the Park. Teens are encouraged to come.

Praise Day in the Park is an ecumenical outreach sponsored by the following local churches: Brady Center Wesleyan Church, Trinity United Methodist Church, Our Lady Catholic Church, New Wine Full Gospel Church, Market Street Nazarene and Oakley Community Church.

Other activities on Saturday, July 10 include the all new Kayak/Canoe River Race on the Shiawassee

River. The Tom Richardson Memorial Chesaning River Race will begin at the Ditch Road bridge (Parshallburg Park) and end at the M-57 bridge in Chesaning near the beautiful new river rapids.

Canoes and kayaks must be delivered to Parshallburg Park in advance. Parking is available in Chesaning where a shuttle bus will transport participants to Parshallburg Park for the start of the race.

JULY 11 – Family Fun Day

The day starts off with the

Dawn Patrol Breakfast at Nixon Memorial Airport, where pilots land their exotic aircraft for visitors to get a closer view. Meanwhile members of a neighboring airport club make breakfast.

Meanwhile, the Showboat Road Race kicks off at Showboat Park at 8 a.m. Races include: 5K Run, 5K Walk and Kids’ Fun Run.

Then, by 1 p.m., find a good spot to watch the Chesaning Showboat Parade along the boulevard, downtown or on the way to Showboat Park. Follow the parade down to Showboat Park where you’ll find

Paradise in the Park and the River’s Bend Hospitality Tent open for business with LIVE music, along with activities for the children.

JULY 12 – Adam Lambert with Orianthi

On Monday night, American Idol Star Adam Lambert, and world-renown guitarist Orianthi perform LIVE on the Showboat stage starting at 7 p.m.

Adam Lambert was the runner up on season eight of American Idol. Since then his first album “For Your Entertainment” debuted at number three on the Billboard album chart. His first two singles “For Your Entertainment” and the Pink penned “Whatya Want From Me” have already been successful.

According to promoter Meridian Entertainment, many people consider 24- year-old, Australian Orianthi the greatest female guitarist in the world. She has already experienced what most aspiring musicians only dream. She opened for her hero Steve Vai; backed Idol Carrie Underwood; traded solos with a legend Carlos Santana and shared the stage with the King of Pop Michael Jackson.

In a late-breaking announcement, American Idol finalist Allison Iraheta was added to the lineup for Monday night. Her debut album, Just Like You, was released Dec. 1, 2009 on 19 Recordings/Jive Records. Singles from the album include “Friday I’ll Be Over U,” “Scars,” and “Don’t Waste Pretty.” Don’t miss your chance to see Adam Lambert together with Orianthi and now, Allison Iraheta.

JULY 13 – Grand Funk Railroad with Mitch Ryder

On Tuesday night, Grand Funk Railroad and Mitch Ryder take the stage with local radio celebrities from 96.1 WHNN.

“WHNN is very excited to be a part of the Chesaning Showboat this summer, especially since we get to do our own show called ‘WHNN’s Summer Celebration at Showboat!’,” WHNN Program Director Scott Stine said.

“It’s exciting to do a Michigan-themed show. Grand Funk Railroad originally hailing from Flint and Mitch Ryder from Detroit makes it a nice twin bill made right here in Michigan,” he commented.

According to show promoter Meridian Entertainment, Grand Funk Railroad, with 10 gold albums, the top-selling American rock band of the 1970s “is better than ever.” “Grand Funk’s legacy looms large over the pop music landscape since its birth, 1969 in Flint, Mich.,” Meridian stated in their news release. Grand Funk’s hits include “We’re an American Band,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Locomotion,” and many others.

“All of our staff had a great time two years ago at the Three Dog Night concert we sponsored. We hope to see some of those faces and many more new ones for this show. There’s nothing better that sitting under the stars at Showboat and enjoying a classic show.”

JULY 17 – Heritage Day

Visit downtown Chesaning for the Crusin’ to the River Car Show, noon - 4 p.m. Then follow the procession of classic cars down to Showboat Park where the River’s Bend Hospitality Tent will feature LIVE music, food and entertainment. The hospitality tent will be open until 1 a.m. for your entertainment.

Watch for details coming soon about the Flea Market & Craft Show in downtown Chesaning 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Rent your own 20 x 20 spot in the downtown Riverfront /Chamber of Commerce area to sell your wares, just $20 bucks. Bring your own tent if desired.

The Horseshoe Tournament is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. as well. Registration starts at 9 a.m. at the back pavilion on the flats in Showboat Park. Receive free admission into the River’s Bend Hospitality tent with your registration.
