PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL Chesaning fifth grade gals drop two The Chesaning fifth grade girls basketball team fell to Breckenridge 27-18 on Saturday, Feb. 27, and also lost to Ithaca, 17-12. Against Breckenridge, Bailey Jo Craig had 12 points, while Natalie Skaryd, Jenny Coon and Gabrielle Drielick all had two points. Versus Ithaca, Coon and Drielick both had four points, while Cragg and Gabriela Escamilla each scored two points YOUTH WRESTLING New Lothrop youth wrestlers complete busy weekend Members of the New Lothrop Youth Wrestling Club competed in five tournaments last weekend. At the Vasser MMWA Open, Trevor Walser took second and Tommy Malloy was third. At the Battlecat MMWA, Brady Birchmeier was first and Logan Zell finished third. At the Millington Novice MMWA, Camden Orr took first while Isiah Pasik and Caleb Sharp each took second. At the Midland Myway, Brady Birchmeier was first and Cole Wendling was third. At the Imlay City Myway, Logan Zell took second and Aaron Zell took fourth. During the weekend of Feb. 13-14, Brady Birchmeier had the most pins and Jackson Knieper had the fastest pin in five seconds among open wrestlers. For the novice wrestlers, Caleb Sharp took most pins and quickest pin. The weekend of Feb. 20- 21, Trevor Walser had the most pins among open wrestlers while Brady Birchmeier had the fastest pin. Among novice wrestlers, Brandon Henige earned both the fastest and the most pins. The weekend of Feb. 27-28, Brady Birchmeier had the most pins and the fastest pin (10 seconds) among open wrestlers. Caleb Sharp had the fastest (25 seconds) and most pins among novice wrestlers. Chesaning wrestlers compete at four tourneys Chesaning’s youth wrestlers competed in four tournaments last weekend. At the Battlecats Open in Flint, in the 7-8 Division, Jordan Rodriguez (46 lbs.) was third. In the 9-10 Division, Trevor Patterson (80 lbs.) was second and Jacob Stevenson (71 lbs.) was third. In the 13-14 Division, Dillen Decker (114 lbs.) was first and Darren Decker (107 lbs.) was second. On Feb. 28 at the Vassar Open, in the 9-10 Division, Brendan Greenfelder (55 lbs.) and Jake Stevenson (71 lbs.) each took second. In the 13-14 Division, Keith Wirostek (100 lbs.) was second. Also on Feb. 28, at the Millington Novice, in the 9-10 Division, Sergio Garcia (63 lbs.) was third. In the 13-14 Division, Austin Fesler (85 lbs.) and Joshua Lucius (114 lbs.) each took first, while Esai Garcia (85 lbs.) was second. In the Midland Mywa Open on Feb. 28, in the 5- 6 Division, Connor Everett (43/46 lbs.) was third. In the 7-8 Division, Jordan Rodriguez (46 lbs.) took first. MIDDLE SCHOOL WRESTLING New Lothrop team takes fifth at state championships The New Lothrop middle school wrestling team traveled to Battle Creek on Feb. 28 to compete in the MYWA 2010 team state dual championships. The team earned fifth place in the day-long event. Wrestling for New Lothrop were: 80 lbs. John Robinson and Cole Hersch; 85 lbs. Trevor Copes; 90 lbs. Gabe Bennett; 95 lbs. Josh Wendling; 100 lbs. Patrick Carnahan and Dalton Birchmeier; 110 lbs. Caleb Symons; 120 lbs., Taylor Krupp and Levi Krupp; 130 lbs. Brett Green; 140 lbs. Aaron Bauman; 160 lbs. Cody Symons; Hwt. Dalton DeSander and Owen Wilson. JV BOYS BASKETBALL STC JV boys beat St Louis The St. Charles boys junior varsity basketball team knocked off St. Louis on Feb. 24, 64-47. Leading the way for the Bulldogs were Terry Erskine with 14 points, Tommy Frollo 13 points, David Atkins 10 points, and Tyler Lindsay and Drew Burk with seven points each. STC JV boys finish cage season with three game win streak St. Charles’ JV boys’ basketball team finished the season on a positive note with a pair of wins last week. The young ‘Dawgs, who ended the campaign with a 4-15 overall mark, posted impressive wins over Swan Valley and Michigan Lutheran Seminary to run its end-of-season winning streak to three in a row. Drew Burk canned 19 points and Nick McDowell chipped in with six markers to help STC edge past Swan Valley, 39-37. Terry Erskine led a balanced attack in the Bulldogs’ 51-42 triumph over MLS. Michael Raymond and Burk each scored eight points against the Cardinals and Tommy Frollo added seven markers. “I am proud of the players and their dedication all year because it is easy to let up when you struggle to get wins,” said STC JV coach Dan Nieman. “These players never let up, and it started to pay off near the end of the season. We ended with a nice three-game winning streak and began to learn how to win the close games.” |
