Clubs/Civic Groups

• The Mid-Michigan Section of the SOCIETY OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERS – SAE International will hold its November dinner and program meeting on Monday, Nov. 2 at Baker College’s Technology Building, Room S128, 1050 W. Bristol Road, at Fenton Road, Flint. The speaker for the evening will be automotive writer Chris Case. His topic will be “Street Rodding the Old Fashioned Way.” Social hour is at 6 p.m., with a dinner buffet at 7 p.m., and the program at 8 p.m. The cost is $25 for SAE, AFS and ASM members, $20 for SAE retirees, and $30 for guests. They will have special guests. • The Shiawassee County Chapter #63 of the DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS will not be meeting on Nov. 3. The next meeting of the D.A.V. will be on Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. That will be a short meeting followed by the joint Christmas Dinner of the D.A.V., the D.A.V.A., and the Purple Heart Association. However, the D.A.V.A. (the auxiliary) will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. They will meet at the Council on Aging building to discuss the craft show.

Odds & Ends

EUCHRE AND SETBACK PLAYERS ARE NEEDED. Our Lady Adult Social Club invites players to come and enjoy a fun night of card playing on Saturday, Nov. 14, Dec. 12, Jan. 9, Feb. 13, March 13 and April 10 at Our Lady Parish Hall, 803 Church St., Chesaning. Doors are open at 6 p.m., play starts at 6:30 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. or after. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. Players should bring their own snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. Bring a friend, a group, or come alone and be partnered up with someone. There is no admission charge. All adults are welcome. • Shiawassee County’s 9-12 Commision’s PROTECTORS OF LIBERTY RALLY will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Fayette Square, at the corner of N. Washington and Oliver Streets in Owosso, three blocks north of M-21 (Main Street). All military personnel, families and American patriots are invited to come honor the military, past, present and future. Confirmed speakers include Nelson Gates, former Owosso chief of police; Harold “Buck” Kuisel, 24-year veteran; and Wendy Day, community activist. Keynote speaker will be Senator Valde Garcia, 22nd District, colonel in the Michigan Army National Guard. There will be a formal memorial service. Music will be provided by Kelly Porter (vocals) and Diane Carey (bagpipes). This is a non-political event, and all signs should be respectful to the military.

Fundraisers

• There will be a SPAGHETTI DINNER BENEFIT for Janet Smith on Saturday, Nov. 7 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Corunna VFW Hall. Smith is a recent lung cancer survivor who has been diagnosed with brain cancer. Minimum donation of $5 per plate will be collected. Random raffles will be available for $1. • Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish School is holding a RAFFLE for a $1,000.00 shopping spree to either Great Lakes Crossing or Cabela's. Tickets are $5 each, with the drawing on Thursday, Dec. 10. Tickets are available in the school office, 802 Lockwood St, or after 10:30 A.M. Mass at Our Lady Church. Churches

• The GOSPELMEN performance planned for Sunday, Nov. 1 has been rescheduled to Sunday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Montrose Baptist Church. From the latest in southern gospel to the hymns of the church, the Gospelmen do it all. For more information, call (810) 639-6410. • Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church and School (WELS), 16070 W. Brady Road (corner of M-57 and South Hemlock Road), announces its annual LUTHER FESTIVAL on Thursday, Nov. 5\. The event will begin with a German- American potluck supper at 6 p.m., followed by presentations by the preschool through eighth grade students of Christ Evangelical Lutheran School at 7 p.m. The topic of the presentations this year will be the "Ten Commandments." There will also be displays featuring books and materials for all ages available to purchase. The event is free and all are welcome, but those attending the supper are asked to bring a dish to pass--both main dishes and desserts are welcome. Brady Road (Corner of M-57 and South Hemlock Road), announces a special "DEER HUNTERS' SERVICE" scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009 at 7 p.m. The service is designed to allow hunters to worship the Lord and still be in the woods on opening day, which lands on a Sunday this year. Food and Fellowship

• The St. Charles United Methodist Church will be hosting its

ANNUAL HARVEST DINNER on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m.The menu will include turkey and dressing with all the trimmings, beverage and dessert. The cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 5-12, and free for ages 4 and under. Tickets will be available at the door, and take-outs will be available. The church is located at 301 W. Belle Ave., St. Charles. • There will be a SUPER SALAD BUFFET/BINGO to benefit St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church Parish on Sunday, Nov. 8, at the St. Robert Activity Center, 310 N. Cherry St., Flushing. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. Buffet starts at 1:30 p.m. with bingo at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and advance sale only. Admission includes buffet, coffee/tea and regular bingo. Tables may be reserved for advance purchase of 10 or more tickets. No walkin reservations will be taken on Nov. 8. There will be bingo prizes galore, plus door prizes and welcome gifts. The cost is $7 for adults, $3 for children ages 5 to 12, and free for children under age 5. Take-outs will be available. Proceeds will go to the Church Improvement Fund. There will also be a bake sale, with proceeds going to the camp fund.

• There will be a SOUP AND PIE SUPPER featuring all-youcan eat homemade soup on Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of New Lothrop, 7495 Orchard St. The cost is $5 for adults, $2 for children. • The annual HARVEST DINNER at the First United Methodist Church of New Lothrop will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 4 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The all-you-can-eat meal includes Swiss steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, squash, green beans, cole slaw, rolls, pie and beverages. Suggested donations are $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 5-12, and free for ages 4 and under. • The Burt United Methodist Church will be hosting an all-youcan eat SWISS STEAK SUPPER on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church, 12799 Nichols Road, Burt. The cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 5-12, and free for children ages 4 and under. • Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Montrose will be hosting a SOUP NIGHT at their new Family Life Center on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. The menu will consist of soups, salads, breads and desserts. This is a free-will donation and a fundraiser for the new center. • The Oakley Community Church, 327 S. Main St., will be hosting a FUNDRAISER DINNER on Friday, Nov. 6, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. They will be serving roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, cole slaw, dinner roll, dessert and a beverage. Suggested donations is $8. The profit from this dinner will be divided between the American Legion Post of Chesaning and the Marine Corps League Detachment in Owosso. CHESANING UNION SCHOOLS BOARD OF EDUCATION will hold a special meeing at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, at the high school in room 401, 850 N. Fourth St., Chesaning.The purpose of the meeting is to consider approval of the resolu- tion bond project bids and to receive the audit review. • ST. CHARLES COMMUNITY SCHOOLS BOARD OF EDUCATION will hold a board retreat on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 8 a.m. at the Hartley Outdoor Education Center, 12663 Beaver Road, St. Charles.

• On Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 6:30 p.m., Mary Turnwald will be presenting on the topic of AMINO ACIDS and how they affect the body. Cindy Helmker, certified Tai Chi instructor and physical therapy assistant with Memorial Healthcare, will offer two levels of

TAI CHI courses beginning Monday, Nov. 16. A beginner session will be offered on Mondays at 9 a.m. and two sessions of advanced classes will be offered on Mondays, one at 10 a.m. and a second at 6:15 p.m. Each session will run on consecutive Mondays for six weeks. This low impact exercise program teaches the Chinese ancient art of movement in which individuals feel more balanced with life, both physically and mentally. Classes will be held at Memorial’s Outpatient Services Building located on Memorial’s North Campus, 1480 N. M-52 in Owosso. The cost for each session is $35 and class space is limited. Luna Alkhafaji, M.D., OB/GYN, will present information on “MENOPAUSE AND HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY” on Monday, Nov. 9 at noon. This free presentation will be held at Stoney Creek Village located at 1694 N. M-52, Owosso. Menopause is a normal condition that all women experience as they age. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is used to supplement the body with either estrogen alone or estrogen and progesterone in combination during and after menopause. Estrogen and progesterone are hormones that are produced by a woman's ovaries. When the ovaries no longer produce adequate amounts of these hormones (as in menopause), HRT can be given to supplement the body with adequate levels of estrogen and progesterone. This presentation is offered as part of Memorial’s popular “Art of Aging” lecture series which is regularly scheduled to meet on the second Monday of the month. • The 31st annual HOLIDAY MART arts and crafts show, sponsored by Altrusa International, Inc., of Saginaw, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Freeland Banquet Center, 8309 Midland Road, M-47, Freeland. This is a juried arts and crafts show featuring artists and their handmade work, including baskets, stained glass, candles, floral arrangements, wreaths, clothing, jewelry, toys and homemade baked goods.
