Hornets top Bendle 27-13, clinch playoff berth

BURTON – The New Lothrop football team is headed to the state playoffs.

The Hornets knocked of Burton Bendle last Friday night 27-13 to clinch the postseason berth.

“It was a huge win against a good team,” New Lothrop coach Clint Galvas said. “Both our offense and defense stepped up and our seniors really came up big for us.

“I feel real good. We’re in a good position and just want to keep the momentum going.”

The Hornets, now 6-2 overall, ended Genesee Area Conference Blue Division play 5-1.

The Hornets got on the board first at the 2:21 mark of the opening quarter on a five-yard run by Tyler Bennett, who also kicked the extra point.

Bendle came right back to score just over a minute later on a five-yard run but missed the conversion leaving the Hornets in the lead 7-6.

New Lothrop added another TD with 8:25 to go in the second stanza when Bennett hit Austin Severn on a 59-yard pass play. The extra point kick was no good putting the score at 13-6.

Bendle again came back to tie the game with 1:39 left in the half on an 11-yard run and PAT making it 13-13 at halftime.

However, that’s the last points Bendle would score.

New Lothorp made it 20-13 with 1:05 left in the third quarter on a 40-yard pass from Bennett to DeAndre Johnson and a Bennett extra point kick.

The Hornets wrapped up the scoring with 5:38 left in the game when Shea McGillen blocked a Bendle punt in the endzone where it was recovered by Severn for a TD. Bennett again added the PAT for the final 27-13 margin of victory.

New Lothrop had 246 yards rushing in the game. Tyler Gross led the way with 124 yards on 13 carries. Severn had 64 yards on the ground on 15 attempts and Bennett carried 17 times for 31 yards.

Bennett was two-of-seven passing for 99 yards, both going for TDs. Severn caught one for 59 yards and Johnson the other for 40 yards.

The New Lothrop defense only allowed Bendle 18 yards on the ground and 99 yards through the air.

Taylor Copes had eight tackles for the Hornets, while Gross had five and Johnson four. Bennett had an interception.

New Lothrop concludes regular season play at 7 p.m. this Friday when they host archrival Montrose.
